A handsome Federal mahogany and inlaid valuables box, New York City, circa 1790.
This finely crafted bow front document box has richly grained mahogany and intricate geometric inlays. The locking hinged top has a barber-pole inlaid border and a line inlaid lip. The front panel has a diamond shaped she-oak inlaid keyhole surround bisecting a cut corner rectangular cartouche with a contrasting radiant fan inlay. This swell front panel is bordered with barber-pole inlay at each side and a broad lightwood border at the base. The box rests on delicate fully formed flared French feet with shaped returns.
