This attractive banjo clock was produced by the well known Providence clock maker, Walter Durfee, active from 1884-1939. It is perhaps the finest banjo clock by this maker that we have seen. This clock was manufactured by Durfee to be sold by the up-scale Providence retail firm of Tilden-Thurber. The lower glass is decorated with a superbly executed historical view of the Boston State House. The glasses are expertly painted and bear a very rare signature of the Boston ornamental painter Daniel J. Steele who was active 1906-27. This banjo clock has a classic presentation form, with a mahogany case and drop bracket. The high quality movement is stamped with the maker's name and locale "Tilden Thurber Providence" and number "6171". The painted iron dial has Roman numerals to demark the hour and is signed for the retailer "Tilden-Thurber / Providence". The clock is set with a full bodied carved giltwood eagle. The movement has been serviced recently and keeps excellent time.
