A superb Chippendale tiger-maple diminutive six drawer tall chest, Rhode Island, circa 1800.

This attractive tall chest of drawers features vibrantly figured tiger-maple and the robust construction of a fine Rhode Island cabinetmaker, all in an agreeable diminutive form. The chest survives in superb condition with ultra clean undisturbed surfaces. The layout and form of the feet are common to tall chests from Rhode Island but the generous use of thick chestnut boards in the drawer construction is a definitive regional characteristic.
The chest has a flared molded cornice above two short drawers and five graduated long drawers. Each drawer front has a molded thumbnail surround and understated original brass hardware. The sides are constructed using two boards of very strongly figured tiger-maple. The base of the chest has a molded apron with tall bracket feet and shaped returns. Each of the foot facings are cut from a single piece of tiger-maple.
