A fine Classical mahogany antique candle stand attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York, New York, circa 1820.
This attractive antique candlestand is constructed of the finest quality mahogany and possess the pleasing proportions of the best New York classical forms. The form of the candle stand and some specific attributes are associated with the New York cabinet shop of Duncan Phyfe [1768-1854]. The rounded rectangular tilt top has a mahogany cross banded edge around a vibrant crotch grained mahogany veneer. The top is affixed to a solid block above a reeded bulbous baluster-form post. The central portion of the shaft has a reeded drum which is a key feature associated with the Duncan Phyfe shop {please see attached images}. The antique candle stand rests on three saber legs with acanthus carved knees and reeded tops, terminating in brass paw-form castors.
