Chippendale mahogany antique demi-lune games table, Newport, Rhode Island, Circa 1780-90.
A Chippendale mahogany demi-lune antique games table, Newport, Rhode Island, Circa 1780-90.This attractive antique games table has excellent proportions and a mellow old surface. The semicircular fold-over top is constructed of richly grained mahogany. The front edge of the top leaf has vertical chip carving and the fixed leaf surface has a champhered edge. The top rests above a conforming apron with vibrant mahogany panels and a molded lower edge. The apron joins four square, tapered legs with carved stop fluting. The handsome combination of a tapered leg with stop fluting is an uncommon treatment. The top is supported in the open position by a rear swing leg. When this leg is in the open position a small games drawer is revealed behind the gate. The stop fluted legs and hidden drawer are features closely identified with Newport cabinetmaking.
