An Extremely Rare American Painted and Gilded Antique Barrel Back Easy Chair In The Manner of Louis XVI. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1810.
This antique barrel back easy chair demonstrates the prevailing influence of French styles in Federal America. The carved legs, which are painted green with gilt foliage and highlights, echo the Louis XVI styles fashionable at the end of the 18th century. It is acknowledged that Philadelphia produced the finest examples of these French forms of easy chairs in a number of its prominent cabinet shops. This rare antique barrel back easy chair handsomely combines the French and Sheraton tastes of the day, into a form which is uniquely American.
