This important antique tall case clock was produced in Northern New Jersey by a premier clockmaker and is housed in a superb case produced by one of the finest cabinetmakers of the period. Aaron Lane of Elizabethtown, New Jersey [1753-1819] was an industrious clockmaker, silversmith, merchant, justice of the peace and town councilor. Beginning in 1780, he advertised himself as a clockmaker, but fewer than twenty clocks by him are documented with his name on the dial. The walnut case retains a warm old surface with a pleasing mellow finish. This specific star punched motif is a recognized signature of Matthew Egerton’s work and can be found on his best cases. The interior of the pendulum door bears the handwritten paper label of the cabinetmaker, which reads, Made and Sold by / Matthew Egerton, Joiner / in New Brunswick. This example is the only documented Lane tall case clock in a labeled Egerton case.
