A fine Federal mahogany and inlaid swell front chest of drawers, attributed to the workshop of Abiel White, Weymouth, Massachusetts, circa 1800.
This attractive chest of drawers was produced by the prolific Weymouth cabinetmaker Abiel White [1766-1844]. White employed a number of specific techniques and styles which readily identify his work, among these are his signature half spade foot. This chest, which has superior proportions, bold inlays and pronounced flared feet, is a superlative example of this important cabinetmakers work. This chest is illustrated and discussed in “Harbor & Home; Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts” page 190, plate 65. The chest was also exhibited in the related exhibit at both Winterthur Museum, Delaware, Spring 2009 and then at The Nantucket Whaling Museum, Summer-Fall 2009.
