A very fine Sheraton carved mahogany antique bedstead with a paneled canopy, in the manner of Samuel F. McIntire, Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1815.
This important antique four post bed is richly decorated in a manner closely associated with the best carvers of Salem, Massachusetts. Broad reeding, turret corners and foliate carving with punch decoration are each motifs associated specifically with those cabinetmakers and carvers associated with the workshop of Samuel Field McIntire (1757-1811). The rectangular canopy has rails with a flared cornice and a molded edge joined with ring turned out-set turret corners. A raised panel with a molded edge is at the center of each rail and is decorated with a foliate ormolu mount. The center of the canopy is upholstered with pleated fabric. The posts at the foot of the bed are richly decorated including alternating rope twist reeding and foliate carving. The central vase form portion of the post is finely carved with four waterleaf stalks on a patterned field of punched stars. This specific motif is a hallmark of the finest period furniture produced in Salem. The side rails join at the rectangular blocks just below these carved vases. The holes that accommodate the bed bolds are cleverly concealed by the decorative mahogany panels which easily slip into a channel. The headboard and simple head posts are traditionally concealed with draperies and therefore are undecorated. The canopy has provisions for additional draperies to hang at the foot of the bed and along the first foot of the head of the bed. The bed is in wonderful condition with an impressive presence and a rich mellow old color.
