Sheraton McIntire work table (Salem, Mass)
This attractive Sheraton work table is constructed of first quality mahogany and is embellished with carvings that are closely associated with the work of Salem, Massachusetts woodcarver, Samuel F. McIntire. The richly figured rectangular mahogany top has a half-round molded edge and outset ovolo corners with disk-form rosettes.
This top is above two locking drawers. The upper drawer still retains the original dividers for sewing implements. Each drawer is fitted with exceptional brass pulls in the form of a basket of flowers. Hardware with this motif was a favorite of the Salem cabinetmakers, but such delicate ring-pulls rarely survive. The drawer fronts and each of the case sides are set with vibrantly figured crotch-grain mahogany panels.
The table stands on four precisely carved and turned legs. The top portion of each leg is finely carved with a rose blossom surrounded by star punched background. Star punching such as this has long been associated with Salem carving tradition. The leg continues to a rope-twist carved shaft and tapers to a disk turning and terminates in a ball foot.
