Queen Anne dressing table, Philadelphia, circa 1725-40
A diminutive Queen Anne walnut dressing table with dramatic Spanish feet, Philadelphia, circa 1725-40.
This antique Queen Anne dressing table has pleasing proportions and survives in superb condition. The Spanish foot is a style that was emblematic of the earlier baroque style yet remained popular during the William & Mary period and carried over into some early Queen Anne forms such as this table. These legs and feet are particularly well developed with a sweeping grace and crisp detailed carving. The piece retains wonderful period hardware. The overhanging top has a molded edge and notched corners with an under-molding joining the case. The case has a desirable drawer layout with a single long drawer above three short drawers in stepped sizes. The drawer fronts, which are constructed of richly grained walnut each have a thumbnail molding and retain terrific original period hardware. The case has an elaborately scrolled apron with reverse serpentine and spur-form returns. Shaped returns flank the gracefully shaped legs with pronounced molded cuffs above excellent Spanish feet with delicate narrow flutes. The legs and feet have an especially deep bronze patina that accentuate their excellent form.
