Federal Games Table, RI or Southeastern Mass
This attractive antique Hepplewhite games table (or card table) includes the rare feature of having an inlayed vase and flowers on the central apron. The form of the table, and inlay patterns used, can be associated with the cabinetwork found in Eastern Rhode Island and nearby Southeastern Massachusetts. The expressive inlayed vase of flowers is a distinctive and attractive motif from this region. This so called “D shaped” table has a square top with ovolo corners and a line inlaid edge above a conforming apron set with vibrant mahogany veneers and line inlay. The central frieze has an inlaid vase set with stylized flowers, which is an extremely rare and desirable feature in Federal card tables. The frieze is flanked by square tapered legs. The tops are set with oval inlaid burl veneers above attractive inlaid urns with flames. The tapered legs have line inlaid edges and banded cuffs. As an indication of the high quality of this table, these same inlay patterns are repeated on the outside face on each rear leg.
