An excellent pair of Federal mahogany and inlaid games tables in the manner of Elisha Tucker, Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1795. This nicely proportioned pair of games tables relate closely to a labeled Elisha Tucker games table offered at Sotheby’s in May of 2003. They have an identical case layout and very similar inlay patterns. The tables, which retain a rich color and bright surface, have shaped tops with serpentine sides and a bowed front. Each table has intricate pattern “dart” inlay on both the hinged fly-leaf and the fixed leaf. This inlay motif is common to Boston Federal furniture. The top rests above a conforming apron that is ornately inlaid with rosewood cross banding around vibrant tiger-maple panels with contrasting line inlay. The central apron has two rectangular rosewood and tiger-maple panels flanking a matching oval panel that is separated by barber-pole inlay. The tops of the legs have rectangular tiger-maple panels with a very fine alternating chevron border. The bottom edge of the apron is trimmed with a diagonal multi-colored checker inlay. The table rests on four square tapered legs with delicate line inlay including a floral drop above tiger-maple banded cuffs.
