This antique barrel back easy chair demonstrates the prevailing influence of French styles in Federal America. The carved legs, which are painted green with gilt foliage and highlights, echo the Louis XVI styles fashionable at the end of the 18th century. It is acknowledged that Philadelphia produced the finest examples of these French forms of easy chairs in a number of its prominent cabinet shops.
