A fine Federal inlaid mahogany and gilt gesso mirror, New York City, circa 1790.

This Hepplewhite mirror with applied crest and fine inlay is a form associated with the finest examples from Federal New York. The crest consists of a gilt gesso, carved urn with a lobbed body and applied floral blossoms. This urn is flanked with a gilt carved and molded swan's neck pediment terminating in floral rosettes. The crest is veneered with a richly grained mahogany panel inlaid with an oval medallion depicting a classical flower urn. The original mirror glass is framed by gilt moldings and a line inlaid border. The mirror sides are flanked with applied drop garlands with gilt carved foliage and rosettes. The lower panel has a rich mahogany veneer and is embellished with a heavily scrolled and shaped ears.
