This antique tall clock was produced by Stephen Taber, the younger brother of Boston clockmaker Elnathan Taber, who served his apprenticeship to the renowned clockmaker Aaron Willard. This refined Federal case is a successful regional interpretation of the high-style clocks produced in Boston. Several distinctive local characteristics, such as the fret pattern, cross banded door and strait French feet, attribute the case to the New Bedford cabinetmaker Reuben E. Swift. The tall clock has a wonderfully painted dial with a moon phase disk and fan form spandrels decorated with figures in a landscape. The dial is signed below the calendar aperture "S. Taber."
