Simon Willard Tall Clock (Roxbury, Mass.)
Simon Willard Tall Clock (Roxbury, Mass.)
This handsome antique tall case clock epitomizes the formal “Roxbury” style cases that were so popular in Boston during the late 18th century. An antique Simon Willard tall clock in a fine Roxbury case is considered by sophisticated collectors to be among the most highly prized antique furniture forms. Bespoke examples, such as this, were specifically produced for individuals of sufficient means, and are the rarest of this desirable form. In addition to a dial inscribed with the first owner’s name, the clock is accompanied by a detailed single-family provenance that extends to the present. This antique grandfather clock is further enhanced by the rare presence of the Boston dial painter’s signature and mark on the back of the dial.
The dial is signed and numbered on the back with the initials of the ornamental painter “JM 77” for John Minot. Minott, was an ornamental painter working 1793-1826 who is credited with decorating many of the dials produced by the Willards and their apprentices. He occasionally signed his work on the reverse in the upper left hand corner. These rare antique clocks are highly desirable and this example appears as an early example of his work.
The dial is inscribed in an arch within the top of the chapter ring with the name of the person for whom the clock was made, “Warrantet For Mr. Jon Smith”. The spelling of warranted is as it appears on the dial. The dial is signed below this arbor in neat blocked calligraphy with the makers name “Simon Willard”. The form of the lettering in the signature is a very distinctive style used by John Minott.
