Charles Babbitt Tall Clock (Taunton, Mass.)
Charles Babbitt Tall Clock (Taunton, Mass.)
This attractive antique Federal tall clock case is among the finest produced in the Southeastern, Massachusetts region and houses the first movement produced by the rare Taunton clockmaker Charles Babbitt [1786-1854]. The significance of this clock is compounded by the fact that such a high quality case houses the premiere clock movement by this extremely rare maker. The molded hood is mounted with three fluted chimneys, which frame a wonderful regional scrolled and pierced fretwork. This dial features a painted moon phase disk in the lunette decorated with hand painted scenes. The dial is signed with old English calligraphy at either side of the center arbor with the maker’s name “CHARLES - BABBITT” and below the winding arbors with his town and edition “TAUNTON - NO. 1”. The weight driven brass movement has smooth winding barrels and a cast bell with the makers initials “CB”. The base rest on boldly flaring applied French feet and a scrolled apron with a lobbed central drop. Harbor & Home; Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710-1850. Jobe, Sullivan & O’Brien; University Press 2009, Pages 294-295, plate 98- 98.2.
